A survey conducted by Bright Line Watch, involving over 500 political scientists, indicates a significant decline in the perception of U.S. democracy, dropping from 67 to 55 on a scale from zero to 100 following President Trump's reelection. The scholars express concerns about a shift towards authoritarianism, characterized by actions like interference with the press, reduced legislative and judicial checks on executive power, and threats to media independence and universities. While some scholars, such as James Campbell, argue in favor of Trump's policies as legitimate uses of presidential power, others fear a move towards "competitive authoritarianism," citing tactics similar to those used by leaders in Hungary and Turkey.
Here’s What They Meant To Say
Aren’t We All Experts Now?
So, in a bid to save us from ourselves, a gathering of over 500 political scientists have surveyed our endearing nation and, with the bravado befitting academic elites, concluded that we are sliding headfirst into ‘authoritarianism.’ Because, of course, nothing says democracy like taking notes from a group of scholars who discovered the perils of everyday governance from the safety of their book-clad havens.
Those Scary Numbers
The rating of our democracy, once a respectable 67, has plummeted to 55, thanks to President Trump doing his presidential duties. The horror! Ratings are all the rage, just like Rotten Tomatoes, except instead of movies, we’re rating the potential specter of dictatorship because it makes for fascinating dinner party conversation.
Autocracy or Gumption?
Our supposed ‘autocratic’ heroes are using tried-and-tested presidential powers to fix the blunders of globalization while apparently meddling with the media. We must give credit; it’s quite ambitious to simultaneously create jobs and supposedly silence journalists, but hey, efficiency is key in governance!
The Call to Prophecy Continues
While these scholars prophesize a rickety future teetering on the edge of collapse, realists like James Campbell suggest they’re just grouchy about politics not swinging their way. After all, the joy of echo chambers is unmatched, much like the belief that Trump is secretly rewriting the Constitution from his Mar-a-Lago resort. Our democracy must brace itself for another survey: the ultimate exercise in risk assessment by paper and pen. Remember, it’s never authoritarian when you agree with it!
